Application to extend existing MUGA at Eltham College

Eltham College is seeking full planning permission to extend its existing multi-use games area to include 6 tennis/netball courts. The application was submitted on 24/07/2025, with the proposed development including:

    • The extension of an existing multi-use games area (MUGA), including fencing and new LED lighting.
      • The extended MUGA will include provision for six (6no.) tennis/netball courts in total. The new fencing will tie into the existing fenceline and match the same height, colour, and appearance as the existing sports fencing that bounds the MUGA.
    • The proposed floodlighting will replace the existing floodlighting with new LED luminaires.
    • The existing 8m-high columns will be replaced and relocated to align with the newly laid-out courts.
      • Additional columns will be provided to accommodate the increased number of courts.
    • New hardstanding to tie into the existing hardstanding access.
    • Habitat creation in line with the biodiversity net gain assessment and report.

    Measurements

The MUGA extension is 30.8m x 37m. This creates a total playing area of 104.5m x 37m. The extended MUGA is 1,172m2, including four (4no.) 4m x 1.8m recesses for goal storage. The additional hardstanding between the MUGA and the existing pathway is 41 m².
In total 14no. 8m high floodlight columns will be installed.

The columns to the south of the MUGA will be located within the existing/proposed hard-standing area. The columns to the north will be within soft landscaping. The total development area, including MUGA surface and hard-standing recesses, is 1,220m2

    Scale

The playing surface will be installed approximately at ground level to match the existing surface level and gradients of the existing MUGA. This will require minor modifications of the existing ground level. The fenceline will match the existing fence and be installed at 3.0m above ground level. The existing eight (8no.) 8m high floodlight columns will be replaced with fourteen (14no.) 8m high floodlight columns.

    Appearance

The MUGA playing surface will be finished with a green coloured polymeric material. White and yellow markings will be provided for tennis and netball, respectively.
