Despite being a relatively safe borough, families in Bromley have raised concerns after multiple reports of theft involving vulnerable patients at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH). With one incident involving a pensioner causing outrage online.

At 9:30 pm on the 8th of May, a 92-year-old woman was admitted to PRUH A&E. While awaiting treatment on a bed in the corridor, she allegedly had her gold engagement ring stolen off her ring finger while she slept.

The ring held enormous sentimental value as it was given to her by her late husband, who passed away at 98 after 72 years of marriage. The ring is described as gold with three small diamonds and the words “I love you’ engraved. The ring was placed between two bands on her ring finger. The family claim the thief removed the top band, took the engagement ring, then replaced the band before leaving her bedside.

Naturally, the alleged incident has shocked residents in Orpington and the wider Bromley borough, prompting hundreds to share similar experiences of missing jewellery, cash and personal belongings during hospital stays at the PRUH. Allegations ranged from missing watches and necklaces to wallets, slippers and sentimental jewellery.

The pensioner’s family have been urged to contact the police, file a complaint, and contact the hospital’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service to preserve CCTV footage, which could be crucial in identifying the perpetrator. The family have also contacted local pawnbrokers and jewellers across Orpington, Petts Wood and Bromley in the event of the ring being exchanged for cash.
